Who is Uncle Sam?

Uncle Sam, a popular symbol for the United States, is usually associated with a cartoon figure having long white hair and chin whiskers, and dressed in a swallow-tailed coat, vest, tall hat, and striped trousers (source).

Quick facts about Uncle Sam:

  • Uncle Sam is a symbol of the United States, together with the bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell
  • Uncle Sam is a personification of the government of the United States of America
  • During World War I, Uncle Sam was used in military recruiting posters  with the words “I Want You For The U.S. Army” 
  • Uncle Sam is based on a real person named Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied food for the American soldiers during the War of 1812. The troops knew Samuel was sending the food and called it “Uncle Sam’s.

Easy 4th of july craft for kids

 

How to Make Handprint Uncle Sam Craft

This Handprint Uncle Sam Craft is really easy to make. You can draw each detail on card stock as templates yourself but it gets even easier if you download our Free printable templates that you can easily trace around to make this craft.

You can also have your kids think of their own special message to write on Uncle Sam’s hat as well!

 

What You Need For This Handprint Uncle Sam Craft

Directions

1. Start by downloading the Uncle Sam Gnome Template at the bottom of this post. Print the template and cut out all pieces with scissors. 

2. Trace your child’s hand onto white craft paper and cut out.

3. Trace the other shapes onto colored craft paper according to directions on the template. Cut out using scissors. 

4. Add glue on the back of your cut out pieces and glue together as shown in the picture below. 

5. Add glue to the pom poms and attach just below the hat.

6. Using scissors or star punch, cut out a star from silver glitter craft paper. 

7. Add glue or glue sticks to the back of your letters and attach them to the star. You could also write your child’s name or a saying on the hat if you want to.

If you don’t have letter stickers, you can use a pen to write USA instead.
