Benefits of the DIY Fall Counting Activity

With this simple DIY Fall Counting Activity, your child is learning number recognition and 1:1 correspondence, which are extremely important for children to learn so that they can develop early mathematical skills.

One-to-one correspondence is an early learning math skill that refers to the matching of one object or number word to another (corresponding) object or number word that are the same elements of a collection.

One to one correspondence is important because it is a precursor for almost all mathematical concepts. Simply put, without well developed one-to-one correspondence skills, young children will struggle with basic math concepts.

This activity also ⁣helps children develop skills like:⠀⠀

  • Hand & eye coordination
  • Number recognition & quantity association
  • Problem-solving & spatial awareness

1. For Children Without Number Recognition

For children without number recognition, add a corresponding number of dots to the leaves as well as, or instead of, the written digit.

2. For Very Young Children

For very young children and those new to this activity, you could just start with just three leaves and the numbers 1 to 3.

3. For Older or More Able Children

For older or more able children you can extend the number range as far as you like and introduce a zero too.

4. For Very Able Children

For very able children, you can add an extended range of numbers and a few leaves with the same number too.

Then, encourage your child to not only match the correct leaves together but to find and order leaves 1 to 10, etc too.
