How To Expand The Use of the Apple Play Dough

Playdough is an excellent addition to your preschool activities and you can expand the use of this Apple Play Dough and keep exploring it for a couple of weeks. We divide playing with the playdough apples into different learning activities:

1. STEM

  • Challenge your kids to roll up apples out of playdough and stack them on top of each other. How many can they stack before they fall over?
  • Challenge your child to create small, medium, and large apples and put them in the correct order of size.
  • Roll up miniature apples and add toothpicks to create 2D and 3D shapes.

2. Math

Here are a few examples of ways to incorporate math into playing with the sensory bin:

  • Choose a kind of object. Add all of those items to the playdough apple. Count how many items you’ve added to the apple.
  • Roll a dice and place the correct amount of items on the playdough apple.
  • Roll a dice and decide what number is one more than the number rolled. Find that many objects and place the correct amount of items on the playdough apple. Do the same with one less than the number on the dice.
  • Practice subtraction by playing slap the dough game. To calculate, for example, ten subtract four, you create ten balls of playdough and let your child slap four numbers of balls. When you’ve slapped and counted, you can check how many balls are not flattened. This is your answer.

3. Fine Motor Skills

Children are building strength in the little muscles in their fingers and hands as they are rolling, poking, and squishing dough. Here are some more activities to help your child strengthening their fine motor skills while playing with playdough:

  • Add a pair of kid-safe tweezers or tongs for picking up items to decorate apples. You can even mix up the items in a small container and have your child find the items based on size, color, etc. using tweezers to decorate the apples.
  • Use kid-safe playdough scissors to practice cutting the playdough apples into pieces and make a pie.

4. Patterning

Pattern activities can easily be implemented into playing with playdough:

  • If your child is just getting started patterning, make a pattern of different colored play dough apples for your child. Then ask him or her to copy it or extend the pattern.
  • Create a pattern of different colored or sized play dough apples, and ask your child which object comes next.
  • Invite your child to come up with a pattern on their own.

5. Parts of an Apple

Talk about the parts of an apple with your kids:

  • What are the different parts of an apple
  • Where is the skin, the flesh, the stem, leaves, seeds, and core
  • Have your kids make all the parts of an apple with the playdough and accessories.
